What are the top three things to do or see there.

Obviously Sea World is a given, but other than that.

1) La Jolla just north of San Diego (Prospect Street)

2) Gas Lamp District (downtown San Diego) A good bar is The Bitter End. http://www.thebitterend.com/

3) Tijuana, Mexico

THANKS! I appreciate that link to The Bitter End. I think I'm going to get drunk there. I let you know of my experience! Seems like my kinda joint. seriously.

Won't be heading there for another couple weeks. This will be my last getaway this summer unless I squeeze in Reno right before football season starts.

Thanks for the input.

I'm in San Diego this weekend. Don't miss out on the World's Best Zoo.
http://www.sandiegozoo.org

I have a handful of flyers from the hotel where I'm staying along with some recommendations from my boss who lives here. Here are some ideas:

-Harbor tours
Take a one or two hour tour of San Diego Bay.

-Historic ships
Visit historic ships like the Star of India that have been turned into museums. Some of the ships are used for tours.
http://www.sdmaritime.org

-San Diego Natural History Museum
Contains the largest Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition ever.

-Sightseeing tour

-Birch Aquarium at Scripps

-Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum

-USS Midway Museum

Thanks quantumleap, the wife is liking the idea of the trolly tour on the historictours.com website. I want to go out on the water for the Harbor tour and get primed on a boat on the ocean for when we go to the Bitter End bar.

I just hope San Diego lives up to the billing as everyone says it is. I hear nothing but what a great place San Diego is. I've got to get down there and check this out. I just hate it when you go to places and your not familiar with the area at all and you just have this feeling like your missing out on the best.

I've heard things are expensive down there. Is this true?

All great suggestions by the way. THANKS

If you have kids, Legoland is a must. Cost of living is high. Bring some extra cash. At some hotels, in downtown San Diego, they charge you $20 a day just to park your car at the hotel. If you want to see some beautiful women, you have to visit Del Mar race track on the weekend. I remember my 1st trip to Del Mar. There was a empty table and I went to the hostess to see about getting the table, and she said " it will cost you $80 just to sit at this table."

Del Mar is very scenic, even if you dont actually go to the track which is very nice - you can see the Pacific Ocean from some spots in the grandstand. They run live there until Sept 5. Drive up the coast from SD, ocean views almost the whole way and if you go to the track go to the infield to watch at least one race, preferable a turf race so they will be closer to you when they run by.

Del Mar is a definate on my list as well. Just hope they don't charge just to take a dump in the toilet.

IMO Tijuana is way overrated, especially if you don't have a lot of time there are plenty of other things to see and do around SD.

If you have kids I would definitely avoid TJ, it is usually crowded and it is dirty and stinks especially in the summer. Getting back over the border can be a pain even on foot, sometimes long lines - so something I wouldnt recommend if you have kids with you.

Are you and your wife active? Do you like the beach and bike riding and things like that? The area around Mission Bay is spectacular for all things outdoors. You can rent bikes or blades and ride down the coast from LaJolla to Belmont Park (most of that is flat, once you get near LaJolla a lot more cliffs and hills) There are aslo bike paths that go over the bridges so you could ride from anywhere in Pacific Beach down to Sea World area pretty easily. Definitely would recommend watching the sunset from somewhere along there either on the beach or at a bar or restaurant deck.

Don't forget the La Jolla cove and caves. They have free concerts every Sunday from 2 to 4. It is located 10 mile south of Del Mar. Hop a train at Solina Beach and take the 45 minute ride through costal towns and sandy beaches. I am serious about some of the hotel parking. Just ask and they will tell you about some hotels charging $20 a day.

It was already mentioned by InSpades. I went there last night. The pedestrian line wait was over 1 hour. There was some guy selling sentry passes for $5. I was thinking about taking him up on it but if it was a ripoff I would lose my place in line and would be late for dinner.

Bitter End is a skank house whose glory days ended 5 years ago. The smell of the basement dance floor is as close as one can find to the aroma of an obese woman's pu$$y after a three mile jog. And the guy to girl ratio is at minimum 5 to 1.

Much better options these days in the gaslamp....check out napkin nights or even city search.

Sorry that last post didn't answer your question.

1. Go to the beach. Drink. Be Merry. Watch the sunset from World Famous or Green Flash. Rent a bike or a boogie board. Get more drunk at Tower 23 or Firehouse Cafe. Pass out.

2. Go to the Gaslamp on a Friday or Saturday and go see the Padres at Petco. The team may be boring as hell but the scenery is fantastic. And Trevor Time is one of the best things going in Baseball, so hope the Padres win a close one. Get dinner before or after the game at one of the many outstanding restaurants. Then hit a bar and enjoy the view.

3. Repeat 1 or 2

WC might be right. Bitter End may be past its heyday. I haven't been there in 2 years.

Yeah, I meant to put no offense to you, I don't live in San Diego anymore but it was dying before I moved two years ago and so many new and better places have opened in the past few years. But Bitter End at least deserves Legacy status.

It does. I had a lot of great times there. One night Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and Vince Coleman walked in together. If MJ hung out there, than it had to be the place to go.
